What: Chef Michael Smith will make an appearance as the Canadian Produce Marketing Association's (CPMA) Half Your Plate brand ambassador on November 7th at a reception for Parliamentarians and their staff to perform a fruit and veggie cooking demonstration and discuss the importance of eating more fruits and vegetables. This event is taking place during CPMA and the Canadian Horticultural Council's (CHC) annual Fall Harvest Meetings on the Hill. Media are invited to attend.

Why: CPMA and CHC are hosting a reception with Parliamentarians and their staff to promote the importance of the produce industry in Canada and the necessity to increase fruit and vegetable consumption for the health of Canadians. A recent report found that close to 80% of Canadians are not eating enough fruits and vegetables as recommended by Canada's Food Guide, resulting in an economic burden calculated at $4.4 billioni.
In addition to providing a diverse supply of healthy food for Canadian consumers, Canada's fresh fruit and vegetable sector makes an important contribution to national economic output and employment. The produce industry and its supply chain had an estimated economic impact of $15.7 billion in real GDP in 2016 dollars, and supported 181,600 jobs in the Canadian economy.
