OTTAWA, Oct. 29, 2018 /CNW/ - In celebration of Internet Day, October 29, the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) has media availability for comment today on a variety of internet-related topics.
With the future of the internet in flux, CIRA believes that maintaining an open, accessible, safe and secure internet for Canada is fundamental to economic growth, prosperity, and wellbeing of all Canadians.
CIRA is available to comment on a variety of topics, including:
- the future of the internet;
- how to keep the internet safe/cybersecurity;
- internet access and education;
- and global internet governance.
How CIRA supports a stronger Canadian internet:
- CIRA invests in Canadian internet exchange points (IXPs) across the country, these are local internet hubs where content and service providers can connect directly to one another. IXPs help improve the resiliency of local networks, and promote data sovereignty by keeping data meant to stay within our borders in Canada.
- The recently released 2018 CIRA Cybersecurity Survey Report provides an overview of the cyber threats faced by small and medium-sized businesses across Canada. CIRA invests in products, services and initiatives to help keep Canada's internet safe and secure as part of its mandate to build a better online Canada.
- CIRA releases an annual report, Canada's Internet Factbook that provides data, trends and perspectives on Canadians use and benefit from the internet.
- In the spring, CIRA released the report The gap between us: Perspectives on building a better online Canada, which captures the experiences, opinions and proposed solutions of 70 grassroots organizations across Canada working to make the internet better for Canadians.
- CIRA is the steward of the .CA domain name registry on behalf of all Canadians. Our work includes managing and securing its underlying infrastructure, the domain name system (DNS).
- CIRA provides roughly $1 million annually in grants to Canadian not-for-profits, charities and academic institutions through its Community Investment Program. Projects funded through this program focus on improving internet infrastructure, helping communities get online and supporting digital literacy to help Canadians succeed in the digital economy.
