WINDSOR, ON, May 20, 2014 /CNW/ - The Windsor Detachment of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) is issuing a public notice with respect to fraudulent telephone calls placed to Essex County area residents.
An unidentified male has been advising area residents about a legal problem needing immediate attention. If left unattended, the caller is threatening the people contacted to attend their residence and place them under arrest. Although all calls appear to be coming from a 647 area code, the use of "spoofing technique" is being suspected. Spoofing is a situation in which a person disguises the true caller ID.
The unidentified male has been misrepresenting himself as an RCMP Officer. The investigation undertaken by the RCMP in Windsor has determined that these telephone calls were not made by the RCMP or any other police forces.
The Windsor RCMP is issuing this media advisory to warn the general public of this activity. If you have received a similar telephone call or know of someone who has, please contact your local police or the Windsor RCMP at 519-948-5287, ext. 222 or 1-800-387-0020 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
