OTTAWA, Jan. 11, 2013 /CNW/ - Students are available to comment on the loss of student loan borrower data reported by the Canada Student Loans Program (CSLP) earlier today. With 583,000 individuals' information compromised, student representatives have met with CSLP staff this afternoon to discuss the impact of the breach.
JUST THE FACTS:
- External hard-drive containing the personal information of 583,000 student loan borrowers from the years 2000 to 2006 was identified missing.
- The federal Office of the Privacy Commissioner and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating the incident.
- Those who may have been affected are encouraged to call 1-866-885-1866 (or 416-572-1113 for those outside of North America).
- National student debt has surpassed $15 billion legislated ceiling this year. The Conservative government has recently raised the ceiling to $19 billion.
The Canadian Federation of Students is Canada's largest student organisation, uniting more than one-half million students in all ten provinces.
