Media Advisory - James Webb Space Telescope: Scientists in Canada will be among the first to peer into the universe with this telescope Français
LONGUEUIL, QC, March 30, 2021 /CNW Telbec/ - The most complex and powerful space telescope ever built, the James Webb Space Telescope, is set to launch this fall. NASA announced today that 286 proposals were selected for observation time during Webb's first year of operations.
Scientists in Canada will be among the first to study data collected by the next-generation observatory. Among the selected proposals, there are ten principal investigators and 72 contributions of co-investigators from Canada.
An international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency and the Canadian Space Agency, the Webb telescope will allow researchers to study every phase in cosmic history, from the first light after the big bang and the formation of stellar systems hosting planets that could support life, to the evolution of our own solar system. This will be a new chapter in our understanding of astronomy, the universe and our place in it.
The following scientists from Canadian institutions have been selected:
- Loïc Albert, Université de Montréal
- Lisa Dang, McGill University
- Maria Drout, University of Toronto
- Olivia Lim, Université de Montréal
- John Mackereth, Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics
- Cemile Marsan, York University
- Stefan Pelletier, Université de Montréal
- Erik Rosolowsky, University of Alberta
- James Sikora, Bishop's University
- Matthew Taylor, NRC Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics
