OTTAWA, Nov. 20, 2019 /CNW/ - The Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) meets twice a year to review the status of wildlife species that have been identified as potentially being at risk of extinction from Canada, as they are mandated to do under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA).
The next meeting will take place in Ottawa, Ontario, from November 24 – November 29, 2019. COSEWIC will determine the status of 21 Canadian wildlife species. Among these are Chestnut-collared Longspur, a bird reliant on dwindling grassland, Ringed Seal, a mammal reliant on dwindling sea ice, Suckley's Cuckoo Bumble Bee, a parasitic bee reliant on dwindling numbers of hosts, and Puvirnituq Mountain Draba, whose entire known global population amounts to 25 plants found in northern Quebec.
Following the meeting, a press release will be issued that summarizes the results of the discussions, highlighting ongoing Canadian conservation challenges and successful conservation actions.
