Detective Sergeant Caren Ashmore, of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), just returned from a 16-month long deployment in Ramallah, as part of the European Union Coordinating for Palestine Police Support. With over 20 years with the OPP, Caren was an ideal candidate to deploy as a police advisor for accountability. Six months into her deployment, Caren was appointed Acting Deputy Head of the Police Advisory Section.

Staff Sergeant Stephen Dibblee deployed twice to the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). His first deployment was in response to the tragic earthquake in 2010 where he worked alongside the Haitian National Police as part of the major crimes division. The second deployment was in 2015 as the Commanding Officer of the South-East Department (Province) as well as the Chief of the Electoral Cell to lead a contingent of UN Police and military with HNP Police to develop and implement the security planning for the Haitian Presidential elections.

Sergeant Mark Bloxham from the Edmonton Police Service recently returned from a 13-month long deployment in Jerusalem, as part of Operation PROTEUS, the Canadian contribution to the United States Security Coordinator (USSC). With almost 30 years with the Edmonton Police Service, Mark was an ideal candidate to deploy as an advisor to the Palestinian Security Forces, working with the International advisory team at the Palestinian Officers Academy.

- Officially established in 2008, the date was chosen to commemorate the events of August 9, 1974, when nine Canadian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Emergency Force in Egypt and Israel lost their lives when their plane was shot down over Syria.
- National Peacekeepers' Day affords Canadians the opportunity to express their pride not only in members of the Canadian Armed Forces, but also in members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, other police forces, and members of the diplomatic corps and civilians who have supported and continue to support international and domestic peace and security operations.
- Ceremonies are held across Canada, including a national ceremony at the Peacekeeping Monument in Ottawa, this year being held on August 12th at 11am.
To mark National Peacekeepers' Day, let us recognize the work of all Canadian police peacekeepers for making a difference in the countries in which they served. Their efforts support countries experiencing conflict and instability move toward peace and stability.
