EDMONTON, Aug. 31, 2012 /CNW/ - The Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, extended congratulations and best wishes to community members in Edmonton for tomorrow's Daughters Day celebrations.
"I applaud community members in Edmonton for organizing Daughters Day 2012," said Minister Ambrose. "I am proud that my fellow Edmontonians will be taking this opportunity to highlight the importance of daughters in our society, and I look forward to collaborating with them to stop violence and human rights abuses that target girls and women."
Daughters Day is a grass-roots community initiative to celebrate the importance of girls and women in our society, and to call upon Canadians to work together to help end all forms of violence against women and girls.
"On September 1, as we celebrate the daughters in our lives - girls and women who have been keystones and beacons of guidance and care - let us recognize that there are many remarkable women in this country who, along with raising families, are also juggling careers, community service and the care of elderly parents," said Minister Ambrose. "I salute daughters everywhere, and the parents who raise them, because stronger families mean a stronger Canada."
Daughters Day was conceived at a meeting of representatives from various organizations, held at Edmonton City Hall in September 2011. Daughters Day organizers acknowledged the support of two sponsors, the Indo-Canadian Women's Association and Citizens for a Civil Society.
The Government of Canada is committed to ending all forms of violence against women and girls. Since 2007, more than $54 million in federal funding has been approved for projects that seek to address this serious issue. By working at the community level, we are improving the lives of women and girls across Canada.
