OTTAWA, Nov. 1, 2012 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, thanked Veterans and still-serving Canadian Armed Forces personnel at the 17th Annual Veterans Appreciation Day in Ottawa. The Minister had the opportunity to visit the commemorative displays at the Billings Bridge Centre, as well as to address a large crowd of youth, Canadian Armed Forces personnel, Veterans and their families on the importance of Veterans' Week and remembrance.
From November 5 to 11, during Veterans' Week 2012, Canadians across the country will take the time to remember our Veterans' sacrifices and to honour them.
"Veterans' Week is a time when Canadians across the country honour those who have sacrificed and continue to serve to defend Canada's values of freedom and democracy," said Minister Blaney. "They have earned the recognition and gratitude of all Canadians. We must remember all Canadian Veterans and continue to honour those who serve today."
Organized by Veterans Affairs Canada and its community partners, the event featured more than 25 commemorative displays, musical entertainment and a commemorative ceremony held in conjunction with the Department of National Defence, the Canadian Forces and the Royal Canadian Legion.
"Next week, we must remember the sacrifices of so many noble Canadians and show our support for those still serving" said Minister Blaney. "We must also work to pass the torch of remembrance on to future generations, for the sacrifices of our Veterans and those still serving must never be forgotten."
This upcoming Veterans' Week, take time to remember by attending a Remembrance Day ceremony, visiting a local cenotaph or monument, sharing your thoughts of remembrance online, or wearing a poppy with pride. Learn more and find remembrance events and activities in your area at veterans.gc.ca.
