OTTAWA, March 23, 2016 /CNW/ - Today marks Holi, also known as the Festival of Colours and the Festival of Love. Originating in the Hindu faith, Holi is a celebration of spring that spreads a joyful message of peace and camaraderie.
First celebrated centuries ago as an agricultural festival to welcome spring and its rebirth and rejuvenation after winter, Holi emphasizes personal reflection and the resolution of past disputes to repair and strengthen relationships.
Its boisterous celebrations include the traditional bonfires and "water fights" where participants throw water and coloured powder on one another, and its celebrations bring together people from different faiths and cultural communities.
Holi is an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on the rich contributions that those who celebrate Holi bring to Canada's vibrant cultural diversity.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage I wish everyone a fun-filled and happy Holi.
Holi Hai!
