OTTAWA, July 20, 2013 /CNW/ - Today, the Honourable Dr. Kellie Leitch, Minister of Labour, congratulated Via Rail Canada and the Canadian Auto Workers (CAW Canada), on ratifying three collective agreements.
"I am pleased that VIA and CAW Canada worked together to reach agreements and were able to avoid a work stoppage," said Minister Leitch. "Strong labour-management relations benefit the economic prosperity of Canadians."
Approximately 2 000 VIA employees, including ticket agents, electricians, mechanics, general workers, service attendants and cooks, are represented by CAW Canada. The new collective agreements are valid until December 31, 2015, and replace the previous agreements, which expired on December 31, 2012.
These agreements were reached with assistance from the Labour Program's Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service (FMCS). The FMCS provides dispute resolution and prevention assistance to trade unions and employers under the jurisdiction of the Canada Labour Code.
