Minister Valcourt Attends the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Vancouver National Event

VANCOUVER, Sept. 18, 2013 /CNW/ - The Honourable Bernard Valcourt, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development, participated today in the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) sixth national event, which was held in Vancouver, British Columbia.

"The strength, determination and resilience shown by former students and their families in sharing their experiences and in talking about the legacy of the Indian Residential Schools is admirable and necessary in order for us to move forward in reconciliation," said Minister Valcourt. "It is an honour to participate in the sixth national TRC event as our Government remains committed to a lasting resolution to one of the most regrettable chapters of our country's history."

Former students have traveled to the national event in Vancouver to share their stories and to ensure their voices are heard. Events such as this play an important role in the healing process by bringing together survivors and the government. This sharing of stories leads to greater understanding, continued listening, learning from, and working together to achieve the important goal of reconciliation.

The TRC's sixth national event is part of Reconciliation Week, a series of activities in the Vancouver area designed to build better relationships and to achieve resilient, sustainable communities. Several other activities coordinated by Reconciliation Canada  are taking place over a seven day period and will conclude with the Walk for Reconciliation: A New Way Forward on September 22^nd.

The Government of Canada remains committed to achieving a fair and lasting resolution to the legacy of Indian Residential Schools, which lies at the heart of reconciliation and the renewal of the relationship between Aboriginal people and all Canadians. The Government continues to implement the elements of the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement (IRSSA).

The TRC is one of the five components of the IRSSA which was negotiated by the Government of Canada, Aboriginal organizations, the Churches and claimant counsel. The other components are the Common Experience Payment, the Independent Assessment Process, measures to support healing, and commemorative activities.
