MONTREAL, May 23, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Children fighting cancer at The Montreal Children's Hospital were recently given a boost from an unlikely source. A large group of executives and partners from Symantec Corp, while attending a business conference last Thursday, donned superhero capes and hit the streets to raise awareness about infantile cancer, the second leading cause of death among North American youth between the ages of one and 14 years old.
Drawing curious glances from onlookers, Symantec executives invaded the downtown core and invited bystanders to tune in to the 9th annual Caring for Kids Radiothon, which will be broadcast live on three Montreal radio stations this Thursday, May 24th. The collaboration between Symantec and Atmosphere Event Communications, a local events management company, inspired the team-building activity that spawned an interactive website (www.symantecgivesback.com) where donations are still being collected for The Montreal Children's Hospital. To date, $6,230 has been raised by the super heroic Symantec and its partners to help battle the "fearsome foe" known as Cancer.
"It is an honour to be chosen by Symantec as the beneficiary of their fundraising efforts," says Marie-Josée Gariépy, President of The Montreal Children's Hospital Foundation. "For every child diagnosed with cancer at The Children's, a whole team of highly skilled professionals immediately jumps to their defense, including physicians, nurses, clinical social workers, child life specialists, psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical pharmacists, nutritionists, school teachers, as well as a massage therapist, an art therapist, and a music therapist. Every one of those professionals helps to coordinate a comprehensive care plan for each child, providing the best possible care for our patients."
With construction well under way for a brand new Children's and Research Institute on the Glen site, part of the McGill University Health Center, it is hoped that technological advances will one day make cancer a villain of the past.
Symantec places great importance on giving back to the communities in which it operates around the globe. Supporting its employees in their volunteer work is a testament to this corporate commitment.
