MONTRÉAL, March 9, 2018 /CNW Telbec/ - Montréal has been named Canada's top-ranking city for hosting sports events. The news was announced at the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance's Sport Events Congress 2018.
The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance developed the Global Sport Impact (GSI) Canada Index in partnership with Sportcal, the publisher of the annual GSI Report. The new index aims to assess the performance of cities that host national and international sports events, enabling host cities to better understand the impact they are delivering through their sport event strategy.
"This is great news for Montréal," said Yves Lalumière, President and CEO of Tourisme Montréal. "Sport tourism is the fastest growing segment of the tourism industry in Canada and around the world. Tourisme Montréal will continue working to build a portfolio of high-calibre events that reflects the city's potential. We believe that major sporting events are an excellent way of promoting Montréal and result in significant economic, tourism and media benefits—all of which are important for the city's future."
As part of Montréal's Sports Events Strategy, Tourisme Montréal has spent years working with the City of Montréal, Excellence sportive de l'île de Montréal (ESIM), the Olympic Park, Parc Jean-Drapeau and Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ) to position Montréal as an Olympic city and a leading host city for sporting events.
