OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2016 /CNW/ - As we celebrate National Seniors Day today, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), representing over 83,000 physician members, is calling on our nation's political leaders to come together on a new health accord that will address the needs of our growing seniors population.
All too often in this country, discussions around seniors care descend into talks of how it costs more to provide care for older Canadians. This is exactly the wrong way to think. Canadians are living longer, healthier lives than ever before and that is something to be celebrated. What Canada does need, however, is to help our health care system evolve to meet 21st century standards and Canadians' needs. Our upcoming health accord between federal, provincial and territorial governments is a golden opportunity to make that happen.
The CMA thinks it is high time our health care system evolved to meet the need of our vibrant seniors population, a group of Canadians who has done - and who continues to do - so much to make Canada great.
