New Tourisme Montréal's nightlife study - Nightlife a promising niche market for the Montréal tourism industry Français
MONTREAL, Aug. 15, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - As an integral part of Montréal's DNA, the city's nightlife is both high quality and of a calibre that is international, yet it remains varied and accessible to all. To paint a picture of Montréal's nocturnal activities, Tourisme Montréal conducted a new study of the trends and key issues in this industry. The conclusion: Nightlife is a promising niche for Montréal's economy and international influence, as well as a stimulus for tourism in the city.
At dusk, one facet of Montréal society goes to sleep, thus giving way to night owls waking up to partake in numerous activities. In 2011, 32% of international tourists who visited Montréal attended a bar or nightclub during their stay.1 This represents a larger proportion than in all major Canadian cities.
A major component of urban tourism, nightlife tends to captivate visitors, and tourism interest in this metropolitan attribute is growing. Nightlife and a vibrant urban atmosphere may even be linked to the choice of a destination as well as a motivating factor for some tourists, like short stay travellers or LGBT community members, for example.
"At Tourisme Montréal, we have always promoted Montréal as a festive city endowed with a unique joie de vivre. This study confirms that nightlife is a significant attraction and that we must maintain its vitality, its reputation, and its quality, stated Pierre Bellerose, Vice President Public Relations, Research and Product Development at Tourisme Montréal. As a channel for creativity, innovation, and originality, nightlife holds major economic importance for the city."
Last February, Greater Montréal had 660 bars or 1.3 bars per km2. In tourist areas, there is an average of 12.4 bars per km2, or 280 bars. In 2011, according to Tourisme Montréal's annual survey on visitor experience, 97% of visitors were satisfied or very satisfied with the variety and quality of bars and clubs in Montréal.
Besides restaurants and nightclubs, nightlife encompasses multiple activities, including the shows, festivals, and illuminations that elevate Montréal's reputation internationally. More local DJs are known abroad, and many world-renowned artists now come to perform in Montréal events and establishments.
