TORONTO, Oct. 30, 2015 /CNW/ - Ruth Goba, Interim Chief Commissioner, today welcomes Renu Mandhane as the OHRC's new Chief Commissioner effective Monday, November 2, 2015.
"Ms. Mandhane comes to the position with internationally recognized expertise in human rights issues. She is the former executive director of the International Human Rights Program at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, and a long-time advocate for the advancement of women's human rights. I know she will further the vital work of the OHRC as she takes up this exciting new challenge to protect and promote human rights for all Ontarians."
Prior to joining the University of Toronto, Ms. Mandhane was a practising criminal lawyer, representing survivors of domestic and sexual violence and federally-sentenced prisoners. She is also a member of the Canada Committee of Human Rights Watch, has an LL.M in international human rights law from New York University, and is a recognized expert.
