MONTREAL, April 29, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Walk, an annual fundraising event organized by The Kidney Foundation of Canada, will be held May 26 in several cities across Quebec with the aim of raising public awareness about kidney disease and the importance of organ donation.
The Kidney Foundation of Canada hopes to attract over 2,500 people in the different walks and has set an ambitious fundraising goal of $300,000 to give renewed hope to the thousands of Quebecers suffering from kidney disease or at risk of developing it in their lifetime.
An alarming situation
Kidney disease continues to rank among the leading causes of death, and the casualty list is only getting longer. The number of people who need to undergo dialysis is also growing steadily. As the population ages and the incidence of diabetes increases, kidney failure is expected to become even more prevalent.
According to current estimates, over 12,000 people in Quebec are suffering from kidney failure and some 1,000 Quebecers are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease each year.
The best hope: a kidney transplant
Organ donation needs have risen sharply due to the rapid rise in the number of people living with kidney disease. The demand for organs greatly outweighs the supply. Of the organs people are waiting for, kidneys top the list.
As of December 31, 2012, 1,250 Quebecers were on the province's organ transplant waiting list, 923 of whom were awaiting a kidney. Every year, many people die waiting for a transplant. |
On May 26, take a lifesaving step to support people living with kidney disease.
