TORONTO, May 7, 2015 /CNW/ - The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) commends the Government of Ontario for launching health hub pilot projects, announced today by the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care Dr. Eric Hoskins.
"The OHA and its members look forward to working with the government on the development of health hub pilot projects," said OHA President and CEO Anthony Dale. "Given the fiscal challenges facing hospital leaders, government support for new and innovative models of care is vital for the continued delivery of high-quality patient care in Ontario, particularly in small and remote communities."
In recent years, healthcare leaders have been working collaboratively to improve access, and enhance integration and quality of care. During this time, the health hub model has emerged as an effective service delivery approach for small and rural communities, supporting the government's vision for putting patients first and providing care closer to home.
Some small hospitals are already forming partnerships with other local health service providers, allowing patients to more easily transition between acute care (inpatient and outpatient), primary care, long-term care and other community-based services, such as mental health and addictions. The model is not one-size-fits-all – but instead is flexible in design, allowing for a high degree of innovation and creativity to address local needs. Its success has been and will continue to be contingent on the strength of partnerships developed by local health care providers.
"While early success has been significant thus far, government recognition of this model is a crucial step to sustaining and improving care in small, rural and northern communities," said Eric Hanna, President and CEO of Arnprior Regional Health and Chair of the OHA's Small, Rural and Northern Leadership Council.
