Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation membership adopted unanimously at national teachers' meeting Français
EDMONTON, July 11, 2018 /CNW/ - Delegates attending the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Canadian Teachers' Federation (CTF) unanimously approved today the return of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation (OSSTF) as a CTF Member organization.
"The OSSTF is a powerful driver for social justice, human rights and a strong public education system," says CTF President H. Mark Ramsankar. "Their voice will heighten and strengthen our collective capacity to promote public education, to advance the teaching profession and to address the critical needs of children and youth in Canada. We look forward to having the OSSTF leadership and staff involved at every level of the national organization – from the Board of Directors to advisory committees to national staff events. We are truly stronger when we stand in solidarity!"
OSSTF/FEESO President Harvey Bischof highlights why the OSSTF rejoined the CTF: "We are looking forward, on behalf of all our members, to rejoining the CTF and participating in advocating for publicly funded education across Canada. The CTF's focus on social advocacy, labour rights and social justice issues also aligns with the OSSTF/FEESO's values and beliefs. Bischof adds: "Formal alliances and cooperation among like-minded organizations will be indispensable in advancing and improving the cause of education in a world where education policy is becoming increasingly centralized and coordinated across jurisdictions."
Bischof congratulates the CTF on the 57th anniversary of Project Overseas, an important joint initiative between the CTF and its Member organizations to send teams to various countries with the aim of strengthening publicly funded education. "OSSTF members look forward to participating in this program where they can also support their international education colleagues, while learning from them. As partners in the CTF, we can work together to build a humane, decent and fulfilling future for all students and the society in which we live," Bischof concludes.
OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
Founded in 1920, the CTF is a national alliance of provincial and territorial Member organizations that represent over a quarter million teachers across Canada. The CTF is also a member of Education International. @CanTeachersFed and @EnseigneCanada
