Opposition parties call for halt to home mail delivery cuts until election

OTTAWA, July 21, 2015 /CNW/ - Opposition party leaders are calling on the Prime Minister to instruct Canada Post to stop removing home mail delivery until the upcoming federal election, according the Canadian Union of Postal Workers.

The calls from opposition party leaders were accompanied by condemnation of the delivery cuts which hurt seniors, people with disabilities and communities all across the country. 

"The people of this country and most federal parties are united in their opposition to the home mail delivery cuts" said CUPW National President Mike Palecek.  "We all want a halt to the devastation at our profitable, public post office."  

"The fact is that the Harper government has no mandate to make Canada the first country in the world to eliminate home mail delivery," said Palecek. "The Conservatives did not warn us about this massive change or ensure that Canada Post properly consulted prior to making this major move."

Palecek also called on the current government to stop the cuts.
