PICKERING, ON, Oct. 9, 2012 /CNW/ - The announcement of the Government of Québec concerning the closure of nuclear facilities at Gentilly-2 is disappointing. OCI considers that the decision of the Government of Quebec is precipitated and the government should consider all other options before the closure of Gentilly - 2.
Ron Oberth, president of the Organization of CANDU Industries, said: "More specifically, it could be considered a model of long-term lease operations, because this model was a commercial success elsewhere in Canada, France and the United States. This option, similar to the model of Bruce Power in Ontario, would reduce the long-term operations costs and reduced risks for the government, while continuing to make a significant contribution to the local and provincial economy through the creation and maintaining jobs."
This closure will have a direct impact on jobs in Quebec and throughout the supply chain in Quebec and Canada. This decision not only means the loss of a reliable and proven expertise in Quebec, but also result in the complete elimination of a sector in Québec's energy portfolio. Stability and diversity of energy supply is essential to maintaining a flexible balance to meet all eventualities.
Moreover, OCI wishes to emphasize that the costs mentioned in the report released yesterday by Hydro Quebec are not in line with other renovation work similar extended elsewhere in Canada. Therefore, a closer collaboration with the teams involved in this case would be desirable.
