LASALLE, QC, Aug. 8, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - LaSalle Mayor Manon Barbe met with the media today at 1 p.m., at LaSalle Borough Hall, concerning the drowning of a teenager the day before, at parc Raymond pool, located at 555 boulevard Bishop-Power in LaSalle.
The victim had apparently climbed over the 6-foot, barbed-wire fence to get into the municipal pool area after closing time. A police investigation is under way to determine the circumstances of the drowning.
From the outset, Mayor Barbe expressed her grief on learning of the death of this young man and offered her condolences to his family. "This is the first time that we are faced with such an incident at a pool in our Borough. Although the safety measures there are in keeping with standards, yesterday's tragic incident is prompting us to reflect on adopting new measures in order to prevent this type of accident," stated the Mayor.
Night-time swimming: isolated cases
A few years ago, night-time swimming incidents had occurred in the Borough's outdoor public pools. In cooperation with the Vélo Sécur organization and the Table d'action et de concertation en sécurité à LaSalle, the Borough had resolved the problem.
At parc Raymond, guards are on duty to keep an eye on the area between Monday and Thursday, 4 p.m. - 11:15 p.m., and Friday to Sunday, 8:45 p.m. - 11:15 p.m. Moreover, a Borough foreman carries out an inspection of the premises every evening.
The borough of LaSalle has seven outdoor public pools, open June 23 - August 19, noon - 8 p.m.
