Partial closure of the bike path between Saint Helen's Island and Longueuil from September 10 to 16

LONGUEUIL, QC, Sept. 10, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) would like to advise bike path users that reduction work on the bike path must be carried out over the next few days, from September 10 at 11 p.m. to September 16 at 5 a.m. This work is due to current embankment stabilization work on the Longueuil side of the Jacques Cartier Bridge's bike path.

This work will require the complete closure of the bike path between Saint Helen's Island and Longueuil. A detour will be set up at Saint Helen's Island, from which cyclists will be able to access the South Shore via the sidewalk located on the east side of the bridge.

The current bike path slab at the St-Charles Street stairs will be temporarily replaced by a wooden passage in order to reduce the weight of the bike path and enable embankment reshaping operations to be carried out. In order to reshape the embankment, it must be partially demolished to provide the space necessary to build a retaining wall that will definitively resolve movement issues.

The current closure of the St-Charles Street stairs has made this preparatory work possible by limiting the weight currently supported by the embankment, which has been weakened by the demolition work.

This delicate work requires the bike path to be lightened as much as possible until the permanent retaining wall has been installed. Once these operations and the reshaping of the embankment are completed, a new paved surface will be installed where the temporary wooden passage is located.

Remember that the south section of the bike path will be closed once again this fall for approximately three weeks. This closure is required to finalize the major work carried out on this section of the bike path, enabling the street lamps to be removed and work on the bike path to be completed. This work will be carried out according to projections beyond September, but the exact date will be announced as soon as it is determined.
