OPP Criminal Investigation Continues Into 1974 Death of Karen Caughlin
POINT EDWARD, ON, March 13, 2014 /CNW/ - Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) today made a public appeal and unveiled a case chronology video in the hope of reinvigorating the investigation into the death of Karen Caughlin.
The 14-year-old Sarnia resident was found on the morning of Saturday, March 16, 1974, near the side of the then-6th Sideroad or Freer Road, now known as Plowing Match Road, between Churchill Line and Lasalle Line in Lambton County.
At a news conference, members of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) pointed out they are specifically looking at a nine-hour gap in the time between when Karen was last seen -- in the early morning (approximately 12:50 a.m.) of Saturday, March 16, 1974 in Sarnia -- and when her body was discovered at around 9:50 a.m. 22-kilometres away. Police also want to speak to or hear about anyone who may have seen or been with Caughlin on Friday, March 15th at locations in her community or at Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School.
The seven-minute, OPP-produced video is available for viewing on the OPP website and through the official OPP YouTube channel. Anyone with information on the Karen Caughlin case may call Detective Constable Rob CARRUTHERS at Lambton County OPP at 519-882-1011, or if the caller prefers to remain anonymous, they can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
