Public Service Announcement - FOR USE: [May 1st to May 15th, 2015] - Permits available for the special spring conservation season to hunt overabundant Snow and Ross's Geese

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES, May 4, 2015 /CNW/ - The Snow and Ross's Goose populations have increased dramatically in the past several decades. In response to concerns over potential impacts of these geese on their habitats, Snow and Ross's Geese have been designated as "overabundant". This designation has triggered a spring conservation season in the Northwest Territories, which serves to allow hunters to shoot geese in order to help reduce the population numbers. This public service announcement is intended to increase public awareness as well as direct the public to where they can access more information and how to obtain a permit. A spring conservation season to hunt overabundant Snow and Ross's Geese begins May 1^st, 2015, in the Northwest Territories. Non-Aboriginal hunters are now allowed to hunt them this spring to reduce their population, because in large numbers these species can degrade natural habitats. You must have a Migratory Game Bird Hunting Permit. Permits bought in the fall of 2014 are valid. For more information, go to the Environment Canada website at ec.gc.ca. You can buy your permit online on the Environment Canada website, or at Canada Post offices.
