Free activities with authors, storytellers, comic-book artists and videogame designers
SAINT-LAURENT, QC, July 3, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Citizens of Saint-Laurent will be able to walk through the doors of their new public library during a major open-house event the weekend of July 6 and 7, 2013. The library's grand opening takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on both days.
On Saturday, July 6, at 10 a.m., when the library is opened to the public for the first time, citizens will be welcomed to the new facility by the mayor of Saint-Laurent, Alan DeSousa, and the members of borough council, along with event spokesperson Dany Laferrière.
"What was a dream only a few decades ago has finally become a reality: endowing the Saint-Laurent community with a new public space destined to become a true meeting place, a hub to foster the acquisition of knowledge—and one that will also serve as an oasis of relaxation," said Mayor DeSousa. "I'm eager for citizens to make this wonderful space their own, and I warmly invite them to the grand opening on July 6 and 7!"
Dany Laferrière is delighted that Montréal, and more particularly Saint-Laurent, has a new space dedicated to books and culture. "This magnificent Bibliothèque du Boisé, nestled in among the trees and bathed in natural light, will add excitement to your life."
Activities
Visitors will be treated to a festive and colorful welcome prepared by the Bibliothèque du Boisé staff: stilt-walkers, music and poetic notes will liven up the arrival of children and grownups. Once inside the library, visitors will have the opportunity to take part in a variety of activities. Children aged three to five are invited to discover the young children's section and attend a storytelling activity and marionette show. Teens will also be able to explore their section and meet Tristan Demers, comic-book artist, and Stéphanie Harvey, a world champion video gamer and video-game designer. Adults will also have the opportunity to meet writers, including Dany Laferrière, to go on a self-guided tour of the building and attend workshops and talks, and enjoy several other surprises.
Description of project
Covering approximately 6000 m2, the new building houses the Bibliothèque du Boisé, an exhibition centre and the museum storage space of the Musée des maîtres et artisans du Québec.
The Bibliothèque du Boisé was the object of an architectural competition organized in partnership with Montréal's Bureau du Design. The competition was won by the team Cardinal Hardy/Labonté Marcil/Éric Pelletier Architectes en consortium/SD associés inc./Leroux Beaudoin Hurens et associés inc.
In compliance with Montréal's policy on the sustainable development of municipal buildings, Saint-Laurent is aiming to obtain LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) gold certification for the new building.
The project was funded under the Entente sur le développement culturel de Montréal by Quebec's Ministry of Culture and Communications and the City of Montréal.
Please note that the library's loans and membership services will not be available on July 6 and 7.
The Bibliothèque du Boisé is located at 2727, boulevard Thimens, and accessible via bus lines 70, 121, 128 and 171.
