MONTRÉAL, May 13, 2014 /CNW/ - Today, Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada held a press conference to share progress on the construction project of its new hospital in Montreal which is currently 35% complete. The event was also the occasion to launch a coast to coast awareness campaign about the hospital's specialty care in pediatric orthopedics for children from Quebec and across the country.
An online article posted tonight to the Montreal Gazette's website, misquotes hospital leadership. The article indicates Shriners Hospitals for Children is seeking a Level 3 trauma designation. To clarify, Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada only treats pediatric orthopedics patients and therefore does not have the infrastructure to treat trauma patients and does not seek this designation.
Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada has the mandate to treat chronic, simple and complex as well as congenital bone conditions. The fact is that currently pediatric orthopedics operates as one single division within the McGill system, without duplication of services, both at Shriners Hospitals for Children-Canada and The Montreal Children's Hospital. All trauma cases are treated at The Montreal Children's Hospital and most elective orthopaedic cases at Canada Shriners Hospital. The move to the Glen site is an excellent opportunity for both hospitals to expand their longstanding collaboration to ensure that all children receive the best care available.
