SAULT STE. MARIE, ON, March 17, 2015 /CNW/ - Royal Canadian Mounted Police & Canada Border Services Agency
On the morning of March 11th, 2015 at the Sault Ste. Marie Port of Entry, an older model blue Ford Focus with Alberta licence plates approached the CBSA booth from the United States. A male and female occupant told Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials that they made a wrong turn and wished to return to Canada. The vehicle was directed for a secondary inspection.
As CBSA was conducting their search, drug paraphernalia, a quantity of Oxycodone tablets and suspected stolen identification documents were located. Subsequently, the occupants were arrested and the vehicle was seized. It was further determined that the occupants had given false names to the CBSA officers.
CBSA requested the assistance of the RCMP. As a result of the joint investigation, the following persons were charged with the following offences:
Kimberly Jo Rose BOWSER, 25 years old, of no fixed address is charged with the following:
1. Possession of a Controlled Substance contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
2. Unlawfully possess an identity document contrary to the Criminal Code;
3. Obstructing a Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code;
4. Possession of stolen property contrary to the Criminal Code
5. Personation x 2 contrary to the Criminal Code.
Todd Donald DESCHAMPS, 23 years old, of no fixed address is charged with the following:
1. Possession of a Controlled Substance x 2 contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;
2. Unlawfully possess an identity document contrary to the Criminal Code;
3. Obstructing a Peace Officer contrary to the Criminal Code;
"This is an excellent example of how law enforcement agencies are working together to prevent and keep illegal drugs out of our communities," stated Sgt. Michael Fenchak (NCO in charge of the RCMP Sault Ste. Marie Detachment)
"The CBSA places a high priority on the detection and interdiction of drugs along our nation's borders. Seizures like these serve as a reminder of the important role CBSA officers play in keeping our communities safe," said Tuula Schuler, CBSA Northwestern Ontario District Director.
BOWSER is video remanded for March 19th in Sault Ste. Marie. DESCHAMPS was denied bail and is video remanded for March 24th in Sault Ste. Marie.
