OTTAWA, Sept. 13, 2018 /CNW/ - The RCMP will hold a tree planting ceremony as part of an expression of regret for the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War.
The Government of Canada enacted the War Measures Act resulting in the designation of 31,000 Italian Canadians as enemy aliens with approximately 600 Italian Canadian men being arrested and held in internment camps between 1940 and 1943. It was the RCMP who were responsible for carrying out the arrests of these men.
The expression of regret will be delivered officially by RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki. Family members of Italian internees, members of the Italian community, and RCMP employees will be attending the ceremony.
