Renowned SimTrek competition comes to Toronto - Former champions will go head-to-head in a friendly competition as part of a showcase conference on the art of simulation

TORONTO, Sept. 11, 2014 /CNW/ - You've seen emergency teams perform real life simulations on television shows. In Toronto, on September 12, teams of health professionals will show how it's really done, as the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Canadian Sunnybrook Simulation Centre host SimTrek: The Canadian Evolution of SimWars™.

SimTrek, taking place September 12 at 14:30 at the Hilton Downtown Toronto, will feature the winners of the 2012 and 2013 SimWars™ competitions in an exposé of hi-fidelity simulation. Lead by Dr. Glenn Posner, this renovated event will see the Canadian Forces Surgical Resuscitation Team (2012 SimWars winners) and the Montreal Heart Institute "Heart Savers" (2013 SimWars winners) giving audience members a taste of crisis resource management, while receiving feedback from a panel of expert debriefers.

"SimTrek is an exciting way to showcase the benefits of simulation training, and highlight the exceptional programs and teams using these technologies in Canada. With more than 85 training centres across the country, there is a growing demand for this type of training for medical and health professionals," said Dr. Susan Brien, director Practice and Systems Innovation, Royal College; Vice President Asia-Pacific, Royal College International; and co-chair of the 2014 Simulation Summit. "Thanks to simulation training, health workers can be exposed to a variety of medical issues and emergency situations, and become comfortable without risking a patient's well-being in the process."

SimWars^TM made its debut in Ottawa in 2012 as part of the Royal College's annual Simulation Summit. This year, the Summit is being held in Toronto and will examine ways that simulation technologies and techniques can help health care professionals learn and train effectively. The conference, co-chaired by Dr. Brien and Jordan Tarshis, MD, Canadian Simulation Centre for Human Performance and Crisis Management Training, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, will host hundreds of simulation instructors, program directors, students, medical educators and planners from multiple health care disciplines and across Canada on September 11-12, 2014.
