Research is key but needs to lead to concrete solutions - Statement by Dr. Louis Hugo Francescutti, President of the Canadian Medical Association Français
OTTAWA, March 6, 2014 /CNW/ - The CMA welcomes the announcement today that the federal government will provide $3 million to the Pallium Foundation of Canada. This is another step in bringing palliative care in Canada closer to First World standards. Although research is key, it must lead to improved care.
According to the Canadian Institute for Health Information, less than one third of Canadians have access to palliative care. Canadians and their governments must confront this over-riding reality. This is simply not acceptable in a country that prides itself on being a First World nation.
Canada is currently engaged in a discussion about end-of-life issues, particularly physician-assisted dying. Unfortunately, the dreadful state of palliative care is not getting the attention it deserves. We believe all levels of government need to give palliative care much more attention.
