TORONTO, Feb. 27, 2012 /CNW/ - Today's federal government announcement of funding for a nation-wide multi-year Healthy Eating Awareness and Education Initiative is an excellent step in supporting the health and wellness of all Canadians, says Retail Council of Canada (RCC).
"We are pleased with the announcement today by Minister of Health Leona Aglukkaq," said Dave Wilkes, Senior Vice President of RCC's grocery division. "It is a vision shared by Canada's grocery retailers and we congratulate the government on this forward-looking initiative."
Wilkes noted that RCC's grocery retailers have already embarked on an ambitious agenda to do the right thing for customers and to support healthy lifestyle decisions.
"Canada's retail grocers share the government's commitment to promote healthy eating and educate Canadians on what they can do to decrease their risk of obesity, high blood pressure, and other nutrition-related chronic diseases," said Wilkes.Wilkes noted that RCC grocery members share the philosophy, inherent in this approach, that the key to achieving a healthy lifestyle is providing all Canadians with information that helps each individual make the right choices for his or her lifestyle.
"Turning the corner towards healthier foods and better food choices will involve government, grocers, health organizations and food suppliers and manufacturers all working together," said Wilkes, adding that RCC members look forward to supporting this initiative.
"We are very encouraged by this announcement and embrace a partnership with the federal government to build a healthier future for all Canadians."
