MONTREAL, Dec. 10, 2013 /CNW Telbec/ - Rio Tinto Alcan is proud to contribute an $850,000 corporate donation to Centraide of Greater Montreal. The Rio Tinto Montreal Office Centraide campaign ran from October 22 to November 30.
"As citizens and members of the Greater Montreal community, we all have social responsibilities and once again this year, our employees and retirees made outstanding contributions to the Centraide campaign," stated Jacynthe Côté, Rio Tinto Alcan CEO.
Over the past ten years, Rio Tinto Alcan has donated nearly ten million dollars to Centraide of Greater Montreal through employee and retiree contributions and the Rio Tinto Alcan Fund. Rio Tinto Alcan added 150 percent to the sum collected from employees and retirees, thus augmenting the Centraide donation by nearly $530,000. This is a clear demonstration of Rio Tinto Alcan's commitment to the health and wellbeing of its host communities. Centraide takes steps to improve major social issues, providing vital assistance to some 500,000 individuals in need who depend on the 370 Centraide network organisations in Montreal, Laval, and on the South Shore. Through financial support, Rio Tinto Alcan stands behind the implementation of effective efforts and local initiatives to relieve poverty and its consequences.
"Rio Tinto Alcan's management, employees and retirees once again demonstrated that the fight against poverty is at the heart of their priorities—this valuable support will enable us, in particular, to ensure a better future for many youth in difficulty," said Lili-Anna Pereša, President and Executive Director of Centraide of Greater Montreal. "This year we invested $2.6 million in 28 community agencies throughout Greater Montreal that work to promote academic perseverance. This is an effective way to break the cycle of poverty while at the same time helping to improve the high school graduation rate, which increased from 67.7% in 2009 to 72.5% in 2012 on the Island of Montreal. Thank you. Your generosity brightens lives."
