The Government of Canada provides $500,000 in funding for the Sainte-Brigide-de-Kildare Church restoration project
MONTRÉAL, Sept. 14, 2017 /CNW/ - The Government of Canada has provided $500,000 in funding to the Centre culturel et communautaire Sainte-Brigide for restoration work on the deconsecrated church of Sainte-Brigide-de-Kildare. Marc Miller, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and Member of Parliament (Ville‑Marie–Le Sud‑Ouest–Île‑des‑Sœurs), made this announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage.
The restoration project involves renovating the church exterior and installing enhanced lighting and interpretive panels. Commemorative activities taking place over a five-month period include an exhibition that will be displayed for several days at the Économusée du fier monde, and a commemorative ceremony on December 7, the 150th anniversary of the founding of the parish. The funding will also be used for the annual neighbourhood party.
The funding is provided through the Legacy Fund component of the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, which supports capital projects that restore, renovate or transform an existing building or exterior space intended for community use.

Quick Facts
The Centre culturel et communautaire Sainte-Brigide is a not-for-profit organization based in the Centre‑Sud neighbourhood of the Borough of Ville‑Marie in Montréal. Its mission is to showcase the heritage buildings of the Parish of Sainte-Brigide (Îlot Sainte‑Brigide) by repurposing them for social, cultural and residential community use.
The restoration project will transform Sainte-Brigide-de-Kildare Church into a community gathering place, improving public access to arts and heritage and raising awareness of local history.
A typical 19th‑century Neo-Roman-style building, Sainte-Brigide-de-Kildare Church stands out from the Baroque-style Montréal churches built in the same period. Its magnificent bell tower is a replica of the one at the church of Saint-Ambroise in Paris.
Through the Legacy Fund component of the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program, the Government of Canada will invest $500,000 ($200,000 in 2017–18 and $300,000 in 2018–19) in the restoration of Sainte-Brigide-de-Kildare Church, which over the years has been converted into a cultural and community centre.
