What: Please join us for a Webinar on "Growing Threats to Media Freedom: Democracy Under Assault."
When: Tuesday, Sept. 15 from 10:30 to 11:30 am ET
Hosted by: World Press Freedom Canada in partnership with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO. Sponsored by the Canadian Bankers Association
Keynote Speaker: Ms. Ressa, whose Rappler online publication has drawn the ire of President Rodrigo Duterte of the Philippines. She is now appealing a conviction on charges which press freedom advocates have condemned as a trumped-up effort to silence her and her publication.
Panel Discussion: On How Democratic governments should respond to growing threats against media freedom. Following Ms. Ressa's address, WPFC's vice-president Heather Bakken will moderate a panel of experts on international response to attacks on free press. Ms. Ressa will be joined by Irwin Cotler, former Canadian justice minister and chair of Montreal's Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, and Rachel Pulfer, executive director of Journalists for Human Rights.
Why: Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney recently observed that "abuses of media freedom around the world are stifling speech and shredding the very fabric of democracies."
The Canadian government is scheduled this fall to host the second Global Conference on Media Freedom. The first conference, held in July 2019, established the 32-nation media freedom coalition. It also convened the High Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom, which includes Ms. Clooney and Mr. Cotler and which issued a report earlier this year recommending a sanctions regime in support of press freedom.
