OTTAWA, July 27, 2017 /CNW/ - The Honourable Kent Hehr, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence, issued the following statement today to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice:
"Today, on the anniversary of the signing of the Korean War Armistice, we honour the courage and sacrifice of more than 26,000 Canadians who answered the call to serve from 1950 until 1953. We solemnly remember the 516 who lost their lives in defence of peace on the Korean peninsula, so far from home.
"On July 27, we not only commemorate the Armistice in Korea, but also the world's realization that the United Nations and its members can truly help establish peace in areas of conflict and stem aggression internationally.
"Four years ago, the Government of Canada officially declared July 27 as Korean War Veterans Day in recognition of all who fought to liberate South Korea and uphold their right to democracy.
"Today, I encourage all Canadians to take time and remember those who laid down their lives in the Korean War on behalf of our nation.
"Lest we forget."
