The Jewish community in Canada and around the world celebrates the Jewish New Year
OTTAWA, Sept. 20, 2017 /CNW/ - Beginning tonight at sundown, Jewish families in Canada and around the world will celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year.
This holiday, celebrated over two days, is a time for families and friends to gather to pray, exchange greetings and enjoy a meal together. Rosh Hashanah also marks the beginning of a 10-day period of repentance, known as the Days of Awe. This period culminates in Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, when penitents reflect on the previous year and look to the year ahead with hope and optimism.
As we celebrate Canada 150, Rosh Hashanah is an opportunity for all Canadians to learn more about the invaluable contributions of Canada's Jewish community to our social, economic, political and cultural heritage.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I wish everyone celebrating Rosh Hashanah a sweet new year! Shana tova u'metukah!
