Today, the Coptic community in Canada and around the world celebrates the feast of Nayrouz and the Coptic New Year
OTTAWA, Sept. 11, 2017 /CNW/ - Today marks the feast of Nayrouz. Each year on this day, Coptic Christians in Canada, Egypt and around the world gather to celebrate the first day of the Coptic New Year.
Nayrouz is a time of great celebrations, when families and friends come together to feast, pray and exchange gifts. It is also an opportunity to honour the courage and memory of all those who were oppressed over the centuries because of their faith, including during years of intense persecution in Egypt while under Roman rule.
This year, as we mark Canada 150, Canadians of all ages and backgrounds are celebrating what makes our communities unique and vibrant. It is an opportunity to reflect on the strength of our diversity and learn more about the many people and cultures that have helped make Canada what it is today.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I wish a very happy Coptic New Year to all those celebrating!
