Today, members of the Hindu community in Canada and around the world are celebrating Dussehra.
OTTAWA, Sept. 30, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, the Hindu community is celebrating Dussehra, one of the most important Hindu festivals. The Râmâyana legend holds that this popular festival marks the victory of good over evil in a joyous celebration that spreads good cheer.
Dussehra marks the tenth day of the month of Ashvin in the Hindu lunar calendar. It is celebrated with great splendour: performances and outdoor fairs, parades, fireworks, streets and homes decorated with candles and strings of lights, and more. Families and friends gather to feast, observe prayer rituals and exchange gifts.
In this year of celebrations marking Canada 150, Dussehra provides a unique opportunity to highlight the Hindu community's contribution to our country. Diversity is one of Canada's greatest strengths, and we all benefit from our country's pluralism and spirit of openness.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I wish all those celebrating Dussehra a very enjoyable festival.
