OTTAWA, April 23, 2017 /CNW/ - Today, Jewish communities across Canada and around the world commemorate the six million Jewish people and millions of others who perished during the Holocaust. This horrific period saw the indiscriminate killing of innocent men, women and children. During Yom ha-Shoah, we also pay tribute to the Jewish resistance who fought against these atrocities and, in many cases, paid for it with their lives.
More than 40,000 Holocaust survivors eventually settled in Canada. These survivors, and the generations that followed, have made and continue to make significant contributions to Canadian society.
We must never forget the horrors of this dark period in human history or allow it to be repeated. We owe it to the millions who died and suffered to never stand silent in the face of prejudice and discrimination.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I encourage Canadians of all backgrounds to stand up against anti-Semitism and all forms of racism, prejudice and discrimination.
