Today, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement
OTTAWA, Sept. 29, 2017 Today at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will observe the beginning of Yom Kippur, the holiest and most solemn day on the Hebrew calendar. It falls 10 days after Rosh Hashanah, the beginning of the Jewish New Year.
Also called the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur is a time for repentance and renewal. This occasion is an opportunity for Jewish families to come together to pray, fast and reflect on the previous year.
This year, as we mark Canada 150, we have an opportunity to celebrate the rich diversity of our communities. Jewish Canadians have made and continue to make immense contributions to our country and our society.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Minister responsible for Multiculturalism, I wish an easy fast to those observing Yom Kippur.
