Jewish communities in Canada and around the world observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement
OTTAWA, Sept. 18, 2018 /CNW/ - Today at sundown, Jewish communities across Canada and around the world will observe the beginning of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.
On this solemn day, families and friends gather to pray and fast. This time of repentance, humility and forgiveness is an opportunity to reflect on the previous year, and begin the new year with renewed hope and commitment to building a better future.
This year, as we mark the 30th anniversary of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act, Yom Kippur also gives us all a chance to highlight the contributions of the Jewish Canadians to our country. Their important role in shaping Canada's social, economic, political and cultural heritage reminds us that Canada's diversity is our greatest strength.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage and Multiculturalism, I extend my best wishes to everyone observing the holy day of Yom Kippur. G'mar Chatimah Tovah.
