Statement by the Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), on the Death of Barbara Ann Scott

OTTAWA, Oct. 1, 2012 /CNW/ - It was with sadness that I learned of the passing of the great Canadian athlete Barbara Ann Scott.

A two-time world champion and four-time Canadian champion, Ms. Scott won Canada's first and only gold medal in women's singles figure skating at the 1948 Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, when she was only 19 years old. Most recently, Ms. Scott carried the Olympic torch into the House of Commons on its journey to Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Games.

Known as Canada's Sweetheart, Ms. Scott was an officer of the Order of Canada, as well as a member of the Order of Ontario, Canada's Walk of Fame, Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame. She won the Lou Marsh Trophy as Canada's top athlete in 1945, 1947 and 1948.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my condolences to the family and friends of Barbara Ann Scott and to Canada's sport community on the loss of a true sport hero.
