Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Death of Rita MacNeil Français
OTTAWA, April 17, 2013 /CNW/ - It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of acclaimed Canadian country and folk signer Rita MacNeil.
Rita's heartfelt songs reflected the hardships and emotions of working-class Canadians. Her warm and soulful voice will forever be part of our musical heritage. The Cape Breton native made an unparalleled contribution to the Canadian music scene. She recorded more than 24 albums, won 3 JUNO Awards, numerous East Coast Music Awards and Canadian Country Music Association Awards, and a Gemini for her popular CBC variety show Rita & Friends.
She was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 1992, was awarded the Order of Nova Scotia in 2005, and is the recipient of five honorary doctorates.
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Rita MacNeil.
