Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 2013 JUNO Awards Français
OTTAWA, April 21, 2013 /CNW/ - On the occasion of the JUNO Awards, I am pleased to highlight the outstanding contributions made by Canadian songwriters, composers, singers, entrepreneurs, and many other music professionals.
Our Government recognizes the importance of Canada's music industry. Canada ranks third in exports of musical talent, and every year, the Canadian music industry generates close to $3 billion for Canada's economy through sales of sound recordings, shows, commercial radio, and public performance rights.
At the end of this evening devoted to music, I would like to congratulate all of this year's finalists and award recipients, particularly:
- Group of the year: Marianas Trench
- Artist of the year: Leonard Cohen
- Singer-songwriter of the year: Leonard Cohen
On behalf of the Government of Canada, I thank the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for organizing the JUNO Awards ceremony. I salute the music fans in Regina who turned out in large numbers for this celebration of Canadian music.
