Statement by the Honourable James Moore on the Occasion of the Launch of Canada History Week

OTTAWA, June 30, 2013 /CNW/ - Every year on July 1^st, Canadians from coast to coast to coast and around the world celebrate Canada Day. This year, on Canada's 146^th birthday, we mark the start of the first-ever Canada History Week, which will now run every year from July 1 to 7.

Canada History Week is an occasion for Canadians to learn more about our history through local and national activities and events. Explore a museum in your community, take advantage of the free admission on July 1 to all national parks and historic sites across Canada, or join in on a local event that celebrates the history of your community.

The story of Canada is full of unique people, places and events that have shaped our national identity. For example, in 2013, we are commemorating the 100^th anniversary of the First Canadian Scientific Expedition to the Arctic. The expedition's ground-breaking work contributed to Canada's scientific, social and cultural knowledge of the Arctic, deepening our understanding of each other and unifying our country.

All across Canada we have an unprecedented opportunity to celebrate our history and the achievements that define who we are as Canadians, especially as we approach Canada's 150^th birthday in 2017.

I invite all Canadians to take this opportunity to learn about the people, places and events that have made Canada the united, strong, and free country we are today.
