Statement by the Honourable Shelly Glover, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards

OTTAWA, March 26, 2014 /CNW/ - The performing arts are at the very heart of Canada's cultural landscape, and the passionate people involved are a source of inspiration and pride for us all.

Today, the dedication of the men and women working in this area is being rewarded through the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards. Since 1992, these awards have highlighted the exceptional contribution of homegrown performers and volunteers to Canada's cultural life.

Our government knows that the people and organizations dedicated to the arts ensure the cultural and economic growth of our communities, in addition to enriching the quality of life for all Canadians. They are truly deserving of our admiration and recognition.

On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am pleased to congratulate the winners of the Lifetime Artistic Achievement Awards: Anik Bissonette, Blue Rodeo, Brent Carver, Tom Jackson, Louise Lecavalier, and Janine Sutto. I would also like to congratulate Jean Giguère (Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts) and Albert Schultz (National Arts Centre Award).

As well, I want to take this opportunity to thank the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Foundation and the National Arts Centre who, year after year, highlight our country's artistic talent through these prestigious awards.
