Statement by the management of Tandem Communication following the broadcast of the Canada Day in Montreal show Français
MONTREAL, July 3, 2020 /CNW Telbec/ - The management of Tandem Communication, which was responsible for the production, broadcast and editing of the Canada Day in Montreal show, confirms it had no bad intentions in removing a spoken excerpt from the performance of Mr. Patrick Watson, during which he recognized the ancestral rights of Indigenous Peoples. Tandem Communication would like to apologize if Mr. Watson may have felt censored following this edit.
In no way did Canadian Heritage have a say in the artistic process relating to the show, or in its final editing. The decision was made due to the limited time allotted for the overall broadcast. The show included a good number of songs by artists Martha and Rufus Wainwright, Hubert Lenoir, Charlotte Cardin and Elisapie, in addition to Patrick Watson—not to mention the other elements of the broadcast.
Indeed, from the initial conceptualization of the show, an artistic choice had to be made in order to fit multiple segments, including portions of interviews, the vox pop featuring residents of Montreal, musical performances and speeches by officials.
The show had to be put together in record time—a mere five weeks—due to the pandemic. The entire production team invested much time and effort to deliver a quality product to fans of our homegrown music. It was with this objective in mind that the choice was made to create a montage that reflected the primary mission of the broadcast—to showcase Canadian music, diversity and talent.
The management of Tandem Communication again apologizes if it has offended anyone.
