OTTAWA, June 6, 2016 /CNW/ - The Minister for Democratic Institutions, the Honourable Maryam Monsef, issued the following statement today on the decision by Mr. Marc Mayrand to step down as Chief Electoral Officer on December 28, 2016.
"After nearly 10 years of loyal and dedicated service to Canada's electorate and to Parliament, Mr. Mayrand has decided to end his tenure as Canada's sixth Chief Electoral Officer.
"Mr. Mayrand led Elections Canada through challenging and complex times with distinction and professionalism, and has significantly contributed to its reputation as a strong and responsive institution.
"During his years as Chief Electoral Officer, Mr. Mayrand has endeavoured to ensure that all Canadians had the opportunity to vote, including through efforts such as the establishment of the Advisory Group for Disability Issues.
"On behalf of all Canadians, I wish Mr. Mayrand well in his future endeavours and I thank him for his service to his country."
